On July 29, 2020, Reiken, a 12-year-old from Lockport, was admitted to Pediatric ICU diagnosed with new-onset Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that prevents his body from producing insulin. This has been a life-changing diagnosis for him. There is currently no cure for Type 1 diabetes. Reiken is under constant supervision and dietary monitoring to keep his blood sugar levels within a normal range. It remains a daily challenge for him despite having a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump (artificial pancreas).
Funds raised at this and future events will benefit a Diabetic Alert Dog (D.A.D.) for Type 1 diabetics. A D.A.D. is highly specialized and trained to detect blood glucose levels. This training can take up to two years. Having a D.A.D. will help increase Reiken’s self-confidence and decrease his constant worry and anxiety over his blood sugar. A D.A.D. will reduce the need for medical intervention when his levels are not within range. It will also provide him the added reassurance and ability to participate in sports and extra-curricular activities, something he has not done since his diagnosis. However, the investment to obtain a D.A.D. exceeds $25,000 and is not a viable option for many Type 1 Diabetics without your assistance and support.
Ride for Reiken is working toward becoming a registered non-profit 501c3 organization to continue our mission. If you wish to become involved, please see the Volunteer contact form.
